Abstract:
This study examined the relationship between digital presenteeism and employee
resilience in oil and gas companies in Nigeria, with employee resilience proxied by adaptability
and self-efficacy. The study adopted the cross-sectional survey design. Primary data were
generated through a structured questionnaire administered to employees of selected oil and gas
companies in Nigeria. The population of the study was 10,714; sample of 386 determined using
Taro Yamane 1970 formula however, only data for 327 were completed and usable for data
analysis. The reliability of the instrument was achieved by the use of the Cronbach Alpha
coefficient with all the items scoring above 0.70. The hypotheses were tested using the
Spearman's Rank Order Correlation Coefficient at a 0.05 significance level. Findings revealed a
statistically significant and very strong negative relationship between digital presenteeism and
both adaptability (ρ = −0.864, p < 0.001) and self-efficacy (ρ = −0.857, p < 0.001) among
respondents. The study concludes that digital presenteeism is strongly associated with lower
employee resilience, and recommends that oil and gas companies establish clear boundaries
around digital availability outside working hours to protect employees' capacity to adapt and
their confidence in managing work demands.
