Abstract:
The contemporary doctrine of miracle money has become a notable feature of some Nigerian Pentecostalism, with Matthew 17:24-27 frequently invoked to justify expectations of supernatural financial provision. Despite its growing influence, the doctrine has received limited philosophical scrutiny, particularly regarding its epistemological justification and hermeneutical legitimacy. This study examines the relationship between the Matthean narrative of the coin in the fish's mouth and the contemporary doctrine of miracle money from the perspective of the philosophy of religion. Employing a qualitative methodology that integrates philosophical analysis with contextual biblical hermeneutics, the study critically evaluates the epistemic basis of miracle claims, the interpretive movement from biblical narrative to doctrine, and the ethical implications of contemporary Pentecostal teaching. The analysis demonstrates that the miraculous coin in the fist’s mouth is primarily a Christological and providential narrative addressing a specific historical circumstance rather than establishing a normative doctrine of supernatural financial provision. It further argues that while belief in divine miracles is rationally defensible within Christian theism, the doctrinal universalization of miracle money exceeds the hermeneutical intention of the Matthean text and lacks sufficient epistemic warrant. The study concludes that responsible theological reflection requires a careful distinction between divine possibility and doctrinal normativity, thereby preserving both the integrity of Scripture and the rational coherence of religious belief. The paper contributes to ongoing debates in the philosophy of religion by clarifying the relationship between biblical interpretation, miracle claims, and contemporary Pentecostal doctrine.
